EDI 997 - Functional Acknowledgement

EDI 997 a specific transaction document used by trading partners in B2B electronic communication to confirm receipt of a partner's EDI document. Electronic data interchange (EDI) is a method trading partners use to exchange business documents that were traditionally communicated on paper, such as purchase orders, advance ship notices, and invoices.

EDI 997 is known as a functional acknowledgement. In other words, when a receiving partner's system accepts and processes an EDI message, EDI 997 is sent back to the sender. A functional acknowledgement doesn't confirm if the Receiver can fulfill for example a purchase order, it merely confirms the receipt of any inbound EDI transaction, ensuring the transaction's integrity.

Purpose

Confirm Receipt: Receiver acknowledges that an EDI document is received.
Syntax Check: Checks the syntax if the EDI transaction document is as per the EDI rules. This can help improve order accuracy by identifying potential errors as early as possible.
Report Errors: Receiver can notify Sender if there are errors in the document.
Automatic: EDI application can send 997 automatically without the need of manual intervention saving time and money.

Format

Each line of the file is referred to as a segment. Each EDI file starts with ISA (Interchange Control Header) segment and ends with IEA (Interchange Control Trailer) segment.
